ASTeC’s Sustainable Accelerators Task Force have produced a report detailing the carbon emissions produced by building and operating an accelerator facility. The report uses the future RUEDI facility as a case study, and lists the biggest sources of these emissions together with some strategies for minimising the environmental impact of future accelerators.
The full report can be found here [report should be hosted directly]. A top-level summary showing the emissions from manufacture and operation of each subsystem is shown below.

In producing the report, we have developed a toolkit for assessing the emissions associated with accelerator facilities. This will be applied to proposed future facilities such as UK XFEL, and used to develop strategies for minimising those emissions.
